Trauma-informed Cancer Care for Individuals with Mental Health and Substance Use Challenges

When a cancer diagnosis is coupled with mental health or substance use challenges, care can be complex. Navigating new care systems, engaging in new treatments, and building relationships with new providers can be overwhelming, or inadvertently retraumatize patients during their cancer care and recovery journey.

Trauma-informed approaches in cancer care strive to reduce re-traumatization and foster better relationships between providers and patients while improving overall outcomes. Embracing a trauma-informed approach can empower individuals on their path to cancer remission and MH/SU recovery and healing.

Join the National Behavioral Health Network for Tobacco and Cancer Control at the National Council for Mental Wellbeing on Thursday, Sept. 28, 1-2 p.m. ET for our webinar, Trauma-informed Cancer Care for Individuals with Mental Health and Substance Use Challenges.

By joining this webinar, you will:

  • Understand trauma-informed care and its relationship to co-occurring cancer and MH/SU challenges.
  • Discuss practical methods for incorporating trauma-informed interventions into cancer care to specifically address the needs of individuals with MH/SU challenges.
  • Understand how organizations and health systems can apply trauma-informed cancer care across diverse treatment settings.

The webinar will feature the following speaker:

  • Mary Sonke MSW, Senior Physician Liaison specializing in oncology, surgery and pulmonology, Penn Medicine
