Intersectional Approach to Tobacco Cessation for LGBTQ+ People: A Masterclass
As a record number of anti-LGBTQ bills continues to be introduced in 2023, the LGBTQ+ community faces not only increasing barriers to effective and equitable care but also trauma and stressors in their everyday lives. Research demonstrates a strong connection between toxic stress, trauma and increased risk of commercial tobacco use; therefore, it is critical to address the disproportionate impact of tobacco use on LGBTQ+ communities. How can we best approach our tobacco efforts to effectively support LGBTQ+ people with MH/SU challenges?
Join the National Behavioral Health Network for Tobacco and Cancer Control and the National LGBT Cancer Network on Thursday, May 25, 2-4 p.m. ET, for a masterclass exploring the protective assets and challenges in addressing tobacco use among LGBTQ+ populations with intersecting identities. In this workshop participants will:
- Understand the root causes of tobacco-related disparities for LGBTQ+ individuals with MH/SU challenges.
- Learn how to apply an intersectional lens – while considering systemic and protective factors – in addressing tobacco use.
- Gain strategies and identify next steps to create systemic change in addressing tobacco use among LGBTQ+ individuals with MH/SU challenges.
