Cancer and Mental Wellbeing Education Series: A Psychosocial Collaborative Care Approach

Original Air Date: Thursday, July 6th, 2023

It is estimated that one-third of individuals undergoing cancer treatment have a co-occurring mental health challenge. Oncology teams are often not equipped to recognize and treat mental health and/or substance use disorders (MH/SUDs), and subsequently individuals are left without proper psychosocial treatment options in cancer care plans. Addressing MH/SU challenges during cancer care is associated with better treatment outcomes, therefore an interdisciplinary collaborative approach is the most promising practice that oncology teams can use to ensure comprehensive cancer care.

Join the National Behavioral Health Network for Tobacco and Cancer Control, at the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, on July 6th from 3-4pm ET to dive into how a team-based approach to psychosocial cancer care can support individuals struggling with MH/SU challenges.

By joining this webinar, participants will:

  • Examine barriers to psychosocial cancer care for individuals with MH/SU challenges.
  • Learn how to integrate patient-centered psychosocial care into routine cancer care.
  • Explore the collaborative care model as a strategy to support individuals with cancer and MH/SU challenges.

The webinar will feature the following speakers:

  • Jesse R. Fann, M.D., M.P.H., Medical Director, Department of Psychosocial Oncology, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center
