Sponsored by the Morehouse School of Medicine National Center for Primary Care in partnership with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Psychological Association.
Description:
Individuals with any mental health problem, e.g., depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, are more likely to smoke than those without a mental illness (59.1%) (SAMHSA, 2014). Consequently, they experience more smoking related morbidity and mortality than the general population (Ziedonis & Williams, 2003; Brown, Barraclough, & Inskip, 2000). Their health can be improved if providers actively attend to their tobacco use with appropriate, proven interventions. This webinar will describe reasons tobacco use is not addressed by healthcare providers working with patients with a mental illness, effective smoking cessation practices, and available clinical resources.
The featured speakers for this webinar are:
- David Satcher, MD, PHD, Founding Director and Senior Advisor, The Satcher Health Leadership Institute, Morehouse School of Medicine, and 16th Surgeon General of the United States
- Timothy P. Carmody, PhD, Director, Health Psychology, Mental Health Service, SFVAMC
After participating in this webinar you will have the ability to:
1) Identify tobacco related health problems in individuals with a mental health problem;
2) Describe barriers experienced by healthcare professionals that affect their attending to smoking and other tobacco use in individuals with a serious mental health problem; and
3)Identify smoking cessation best practices effective with individuals with a serious mental health problem.
