2021 CANCER & MENTAL WELLBEING EDUCATION TRAINING SERIES: A Call to Action –Exploring Solutions Across the Continuum of Cancer Care

The multi-part series in August and September will:

  • Feature experts from the field, national partners and CDC’s Networking2Save – a consortium of national organizations to advance the prevention of commercial tobacco use and cancer in populations experiencing tobacco- and cancer-related health disparities.
  • Explore cancer disparities in populations with mental health and substance use challenges and identify strategies to support those individuals in cancer care.
  • Examine the risk factors of a cancer diagnosis on individuals with mental health and substance use challenges and identify ways to maximize resources to implement wellness services.
  • Share resources and strategies to assist organizations engage communities and build partnerships to increase access to cancer screening, treatment and survivorship services.

Part 5: From Screening to Survivorship: Mental Wellbeing, Cancer Care and COVID-19

By attending part 5, attendees will be able to:

• Increase awareness of cancer disparities in behavioral health populations
• Identify strategies to support individuals with mental health and substance use challenges in their cancer care
• Explore ways to include mental wellbeing in cancer survivorship programming
• Understand key COVID-19 considerations for cancer prevention, care, and survivorship

From Screening to Survivorship: Mental Wellbeing, Cancer Care and COVID-19 — Join Laura Makaroff, DO, family physician and senior vice president of prevention and early detection at the American Cancer Society, to explore ways to incorporate mental wellbeing in cancer survivorship programming and understand key COVID-19 considerations for cancer prevention, care and survivorship.

Part 6: On the Road to Recovery & Wellness: What Providers Need to Know About Mental Health Treatment & Cancer

By attending part 6, attendees will be able to:

• Highlight the complexities involved in the treatment of co-morbid psychiatric and substance use disorders
• Examine the implications of co-occurring disorders on a cancer diagnosis and treatment
• Identify actionable steps behavioral health providers can take to enhance their approach to treatment
• Consider the impact of treating behavioral health conditions on short-term and long-term cancer care

On the Road to Recovery & Wellness: What Providers Need to Know About Mental Health Treatment & Cancer — Join Maher Karam-Hage, M.D., professor, Department of Behavioral Science, Division of Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences, and medical director, Tobacco Treatment Program, Department of Behavioral Science, at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center for a dive into the clinical considerations around tobacco treatment and the implications of co-occurring disorders on cancer treatment.

Part 7: Mental Health and Cancer: Person-centered Collaborative Cancer Care

By attending part 7, attendees will be able to:

  • Examine barriers to care for people with severe mental health challenges.
  • Explore strategies to reduce disparities across the continuum of care.
  • Gain skills to integrate person-centered resiliency-oriented cancer care for individuals with mental health and substance use challenges.
