Justice in the Air: Findings from the Tobacco Disparities Messaging Project
Presentation Overview:
Words matter, not only in mass media campaigns, but also when presenting data to inform public health action. Uneven tobacco protections are a major driver of disease and early death in marginalized communities across America, but there is a disconnect between this evidence and general public understanding of the issue. The way tobacco related data is presented to the reader can influence the meaning readers’ assign to data and their understanding of how systemic and structural factors drive racial, social, and geographic inequity.
This webinar will give an overview of a multi-method communication research initiative that used an iterative approach to establish reliable framing recommendations with more than 10,000 Americans. Representatives from the Tobacco Disparities Messaging Project will provide an overview of their research methods, describe impactful message frames, and explain how these concepts can be applied when communicating about data and evaluation findings.
